Blog #4

So I thought I would be incredibly unoriginal this week for my blog and put up a picture that doubtlessly many of you will also pick. But this picture intrigues me so much I thought I'd comment on it anyway. I have selected the mona lisa. The portrait was obviously done by the famous Leonardo Da Vinci, and is an oil on wood painting. The woman in this portrait is extremely unremarkable, with no obvious adornment or rich clothing. Who was this young woman? Another interesting thing about this painting to me is the slighty smile she has. What could she be smiling at?

I don't think the mysteries of this painting will ever be really be unlocked, be they many or few, but it's very interesting to speculate.

  1. Hi Ryan,
I think it is interesting that Da Vinci carried this painting around with him all his life, never selling it to anybody. The smile seems to be an inside joke between Mona Lisa and Leonardo, maybe?

  2. I agree with Kimberlie. This painting obviously had some underlying/personal meaning to Da Vinci. My brother is in the Army and saw this painting on one of his trips to Paris. He is not an art fanatic, but was completely blown away by this portrait. He said it was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. It moved him. That says a lot about a piece of art. When something without words can have such a profound affect on someone like my brother then it is definitely a masterpiece.

  3. I could never figure out what was a little unsettling about this painting... I found it so interesting to read the comment in our book about her having no eyebrows!!! She doesn't!!! I think that TOTALLY adds to the creepy feel of the piece... with that smirk... so strange.
